iOS vs Android App Development: Key Considerations

Choosing between iOS and Android development: audience, design conventions, device range, testing scope and launching on one or both platforms.

One of the first decisions in any mobile project is where to launch: iOS, Android or both. There is no universal answer, but there are clear questions that lead to a sensible decision for your product.

Who is your audience?

Platform popularity varies by region, age group and market segment. Look at where your target users are, not at global averages. If your audience is split, launching on both may be necessary; if it leans heavily one way, starting there can focus resources.

Design conventions differ

iOS and Android have different navigation patterns, typography, controls and system behaviours. A product can share a visual identity across both, but details such as back navigation, sheets and settings should feel native to each platform. Ignoring this makes an app feel foreign to half its users.

Device range and testing

iOS runs on a relatively narrow range of devices, which simplifies testing. Android runs on a much broader range of screen sizes and hardware, which requires flexible layouts and broader testing coverage. Neither is better; they demand different planning. See our Android and iOS service pages.

One platform first, or both?

Launching on one platform first lets you learn from real users with a smaller investment, then expand. Launching on both reaches more people from day one but increases the scope of design, development and testing. The right choice depends on your audience, budget and how confident you are in the product concept.

Store review and policies

Both platforms have review processes and policies that can affect features, payments and privacy disclosures. Plan with these in mind from the beginning rather than discovering constraints just before submission.

Making the decision

  • Where are your target users today?
  • What is your budget for the first release?
  • How much do you need to learn before scaling?
  • Are there platform-specific features your product depends on?
