Onboarding is the first real conversation between your app and its users. Done well, it gets people to value quickly. Done poorly, it becomes a series of screens to skip — or a reason to uninstall.

Get to value fast

Identify the first meaningful action — adding a task, logging a habit, starting a workout — and design onboarding to reach it as quickly as possible.

Ask only what you need

Every question during onboarding costs attention. Ask only for information required to personalise the first experience; gather the rest later, in context.

Prime permissions in context

Request notification or health permissions when the user understands why they help — for example, when setting a first reminder — rather than in a sequence of system prompts at launch.

Teach through use

Instead of tutorial carousels, use contextual hints and well-designed empty states that show what to do next.

Let users skip and return

Some users want to explore immediately. Allow skipping and make it easy to revisit setup later.

Measure and refine

Onboarding is never finished. Review where users drop off and refine. Our UI/UX design work treats onboarding as a core flow.
